What is RBI Grade B

  • It is a mid-management level post in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which is India’s central bank.

  • Grade B Officers are involved in policy, regulation, supervision, economic research, statistics, financial markets, bank regulation, etc.

  • There are different streams like General, DEPR (Department of Economic & Policy Research), DSIM (Statistics & Information Management). Occasionally there may be other specialized streams (e.g. Legal, etc.).


Eligibility Criteria (2025 / Recent)

Based on the recent notification, here are the eligibility criteria:

Selection / Exam Pattern

Here’s how you are selected for Grade B, roughly:

  1. Phase I (Objective Test)

    • Tests general ability, reasoning, quantitative aptitude, English, general knowledge, etc.

    • Screening exam.

  2. Phase II

    • More specialised papers depending on stream (e.g. Economics / Statistics etc.).

    • Includes descriptive / writing component in English.

  3. Interview

    • For those who qualify Phase II.

What you’ll essentially do as a Grade B Officer:

  • Work in departments like monetary policy, financial markets, public debt, bank supervision/regulation, statistics, economic research.

  • Data analysis, report writing, research, advisory tasks.

  • Overseeing compliance, working with other regulatory authorities.

  • Sometimes postings at regional offices; transfers are possible.


Career Growth

  • RBI Grade B is considered prestigious and offers good upward mobility.

  • Over years, with experience and performance, you can move up to higher grades (Grade C, D, etc.), eventually to senior leadership (General Manager, Executive Director, etc.).
